I"ve searched and found that I"m just suppose to pry harder. I"ve tried and my front drive shaft will not budge. I have the retaining caps and bolts off on both the transfer case side and front diff side. When I try to pry the shaft into the transfer case it moves the entire case and tranny, with no movement of the shaft. How the heck does this "2min job" come out???

It sounds like the slip joint on your driveshaft may be seized, preventing it from compressing and allowing you to remove it. If you look near the center of your driveshaft there should be a grease fitting, close to where it "slips" together. The driveshaft has to compress before it will come out.

yup that nipple has rust all over it and has never taken grease. I"ve got it soaking in release all, if that doesnt free it...what then?

Can"t believe nobody else has answered... I"ve never had one seize on me personally, I"ve only heard (I think on here) of it happening to guys.I can"t remember if there is any rubber in there, I would heat it with a torch and try to work it loose, but may someone who has actually dealt with this before will chime in.

Be careful removing it...4L80E driveshaft in a half ton is very rare ( not a common length)... and expensive. ICBC paid over $600.00 for a used one for my truck a few years back after a not at fault accident. Try banging it with a plastic hammer...near the slip yoke. Or remove the zerk and replace it with a new one. Then pump grease to try to expand the splines. Soak a rag in release all or Lloyds moovit and tie wrap it to the spline area overnight. Then bang it with the plastic hammer. Good Luck.

do NOT heat the driveshaft...it will lose it"s strength and you"ll risk snapping it on the road...instead use a rubber dead blow hammer and rap the slip joint while soaking in releaseall.pry from both ends...mine was a son of a B&^%H to get out. if you can"t get it to compress you might be into a new driveshaft, because those splines will be messed up...remove the zerk fitting and allow any fluid to release pressure while prying...it might be hydrolocked...

Getting new driveshafts made are cheaper than getting used ones generally. Why not heat with a torch? As long as you don"t bring the steel over it"s transformation temperature it"s properties will not be changed.Assuming you have a torch and are given the right procedures to follow of course.

I have never heard of one seizing... I usually have an issue with ripping the splines inside to bits. Then you just sit there with a nice ticking noise.

If it is defenetly the slip joint thats the hangup, take out the 2 front axle bracket bolts ,and let the axle rotate down, might give enough clearance to get shaft out.
