Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa Italy. It was Columbus’ dream to sail west across the Atlantic Ocean to get to India. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Italy finally agreed to pay for his trip in 1492. This is why you may have heard the rhyme;

…”In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”

Columbus made a total of four trips during the years of 1492 and 1504. On his first trip Columbus led a group of 3 ships; The Nina, The Pinta and the Santa Maria. After one month of sailing they spotted what is now known as the Bahamas. Columbus thought he had reached Asia and called this new land the Indies and he called the people there Indians.

On his second voyage Columbus sailed with a group of 17 ships! He was sent to find gold and capture Indians. On this voyage he found the island he named Dominica.

On his third voyage in 1498 Columbus sighted the coast of South America. Columbus was the first European since Leif Ericsson to stand on American soil.

On his fourth and last trip in 1502 Columbus traveled to Central America and Jamaica. The purpose of this trip was to find a water passage connecting the Indies with the Indian Ocean. After running into many problems with the weather and their boats, Columbus finally returned home without finding the passage he was looking for.
